Blame Municipal Assembly for the intensity of Odawna fire - GFS

The Ghana Fire Service (GFS) says their efforts to bring the fire at Odwana Market was slow. According to them,  they could not respond to yesterdays incident quickly because of the Municipal Assembly.

Mr Ellis Robinson Oko, the public relations officer mentioned that the Municipal Assembly refused to adhere to the original layout of the market. This prevented them from having easy access to the market yesterday.

He said : “We were part of the original plan of the market but the assembly refused to go by it. Because of the revenue they sought to make, they gave various spots to shop owners. They allowed many containers to spring up at the place, destroying the plan and blocking the access roads”.

The Ghana Fire Service said, they had given recommendations to the assembly. After the last incident ( fire that gutted the market) but the Assembly did not obliged to them.

The public relations officer added: “Our findings and recommendations on the last fire were shared with the assembly. But they didn’t listen to us. We told them the containers at the market were too many and had blocked access roads. We told them to remove some containers but they didn’t”,.

He emphasized that the recent fire at the Odwana market raged for long hour. This is not because GFS was incapable but because the Assembly was focused on revenue generation. And not safety. “The containers had blocked access roads and prevented the fire tenders from reaching the fire on time”.

As a result of the fire, hundreds of stalls at the Odwana Market at Kwame Nkrumah Circle caught fire at dawn on Wednesday.

”The pedestrian shopping Mall as well as the shop owners at the market are in shock as thousands of cedis worth of goods have been destroyed”.  Eyewitnesses added
