SIM card re-registration deadline extended to September 30
The sim re-registration deadline has been extended to 30 September 2022. As expressed by many Ghanaians, they have faced some challenges with the sim re-registration process. Therefore, the Minister of Digitalization and Communication has extended the deadline from today 31 July 2022 to 30 September 2022.
At a press event, Ursula Owusu, the Minister of Digitalization and Communication stated that the extension comes as a result of consultation with key industry stakeholders.
According to her, “Upon consultation with the industry and in view of the challenges enumerated above, I have very reluctantly decided to grant a conditional extension. The program will be extended to 30th September to end on the anniversary of its commencement.”
This means there will be a year sim re-registration exercise in the country. Hon. Ursula Owusu also went on to say “That will give us one full year of SIM registration. It will be reviewed at the end of this month and any SIM that has not been fully registered by the end of August will be barred from receiving certain services including voice and data services,”
REASON FOR THE EXTENSION
According to the minister, they noticed the challenges associated with registration of the Ghana Card i.e long queues. As a result of this many citizens have not registered their sims yet. Therefore, the current extended date (30 September 2022) is the final closing date for the sim re-registration exercise.
For this reason, mobile network operators, NCA, as well as the NIA have all deployed additional staff, procured the necessary logistics, and are incurring significant expenses to conduct this exercise successfully. Hon. Ursula Owusu stated that any extension of the process increases their cost.
The Way Forward
To be able to complete the registration process successfully, the minister has announced that the sim registration app will be launched next week. This will help people register in the comfort of their homes. This should solve the challenges associated with the sim card registration exercise for most Ghanaians.
